Stinging Insect Identification
Yellow Jackets
Yellow jackets are a social species that can have thousands of members living in a single nest. Yellow jackets are a common problem at outdoor events because they like to feed on sweets and meats. They build their paper nests in the ground; but, if given the chance, they may place a nest inside a building in walls voids or in attics spaces. Yellow jackets have yellow and black faces and a yellow and black body that forms a band-like pattern. They have a thin defined waist along with elongated wings that are as long as their body is and that fold laterally when resting.
Wasps
Depending on the species wasps can be yellow, red, brown, or black; and adult workers grow to be about ¾ of an inch in length. Wasps can be stripped or not; most species have two pairs of wings and a pinched in waist. Again, depending on their species, wasps can be social or non-social and can be predatory or even parasitic. Wasps can be particularly dangerous because they have the ability to sting their victims multiple times.
Dangers Associated With Stinging Insects
Like their name implies, stinging insects sting and if you are allergic to their venom, you could have a serious, life threatening reaction. For that reason, you will want to avoid any wasp nest that you may discover, and contact the professionals to assist in proper wasp nest removal in New Jersey.
Stinging Insect Prevention
Preventing problems with stinging insects is important because the venom from a stinging insect can not only cause painful raised welts, but it can cause a serious allergic reaction that requires immediate medical attention. There is no way to completely prevent stinging insects from choosing your property to nest on, but there are some steps that you can take to help stop them from getting inside your home.
Stinging insect prevention tips:
- Make sure that all chimneys have a tight fitting cap on them.
- Be sure all vent covers are secure, and that spaces around utility entrances traveling into your home are sealed.
- Caulk any gaps found around exterior windows and doors, and make sure that any spaces found around air conditioning units are sealed.
- Fix any opening or spaces found around roof eaves or soffits.
- Inspect your home’s foundation and exterior walls and fix any holes, cracks, or crevices.
