Flies and gnats are common New Jersey household nuisances. They can easily enter your home, contaminate your food, transmit dangerous diseases, and getting rid of them is no easy task either. Read on to learn more about how you can prevent and identify these nasty pests.
Fly and Gnat Identification
Flies and gnats have a single pair of wings. There are many different species of each, but both are equally capable of spreading bacteria and pathogens wherever they land. Some of the most common fly and gnat species include:
- House flies: House flies are small and gray, typically about ⅛- to ¼-inch long. Adult house flies have four distinctive longitudinal stripes on the thorax. House flies are very common and a small problem with house flies can quickly become a large one.
- Gnats (small flies): Gnats are typically smaller than flies—less than ¼-inch long. Depending on the species, gnats are yellowish or tan to dark brown in color. Common gnat species include fruit flies, phorid flies, and fungus gnats. These species are usually found in areas with high moisture and can become quite problematic in the kitchen, pantry, and garbage areas.
- Bottle flies: Bottle flies or blow flies are a large species of fly. Adults can range in size from ⅜ to ⅝ inch in length. They are metallic green, blue, or copper in color. Around homes, bottle flies are found infesting areas where there are piles of garbage, decaying vegetation, and animal feces.
Preventing Flies and Gnats
Proper sanitation and food storage practices are essential to preventing problems with flies and gnats. All outdoor garbage cans must have tight-fitting lids and be stored a safe distance away from the exterior of your home. Compost piles should be placed away from your home and kept covered. Vegetable gardens should be maintained and any fallen vegetables should be picked up and discarded. All pet waste should be removed and disposed of properly.
Inside your home, you should reduce areas of moisture by fixing any leaky pipes or fixtures, routinely wiping down sinks, and cleaning out drains. Food should be stored in sealed containers or in the refrigerator. Any spills or crumbs should be quickly cleaned up and garbage should be regularly collected and removed.
